BYD retakes the global EV crown from Tesla in Q2

The battery-electric league table has a familiar name at the top again. Figures reported in early July show BYD delivered 557,090 fully electric cars in the second quarter of 2026, ahead of Tesla's 480,126 — a lead of nearly 77,000 units, or about 16 percent. For the first half of the year BYD is narrowly ahead too, 867,479 to 838,149.

A closer race than the headline

The gap looks decisive, but the detail is more interesting. Tesla actually posted the strongest second quarter in its history, up around 25 percent year over year, while BYD's own volume slipped slightly against a very strong 2025 comparison. Both companies are selling more electric cars than ever; BYD is simply scaling faster and across more markets.

The two are also chasing different goals. BYD leans on high volume and aggressive pricing across a very broad model range, while Tesla concentrates on a tighter line-up sold as a software-led premium ecosystem. Both approaches are working; they are just optimised for different things.

Why Europe now decides it

The most telling number is not in China at all. BYD's European sales more than doubled year over year, turning the continent into the real battleground for global leadership. For buyers, that fight is good news: more models, sharper pricing and faster feature cycles as two giants compete for the same driveways.
