Ionity is trying a simple fix for one of the most common fast-charging bottlenecks: drivers staying plugged in after the fast part of the session is over. Electrive reported on July 8 that Ionity's new Fast Lane Reward gives eligible users a 5 kWh credit when they stop around 80 percent or charge during off-peak hours.

Why 80 percent matters

Most EVs charge quickly at lower battery percentages, then slow sharply as the pack fills. That means the last 20 percent can take a surprisingly long time, especially on busy holiday routes. A driver who leaves at 80 percent often saves time for themselves and frees the stall for the next car.

Ionity's approach is interesting because it rewards behavior instead of only punishing overstays. A small energy credit will not change every charging session, but it makes the efficient choice visible inside the app. That matters for new EV drivers who still treat 100 percent like a normal fuel-tank target.

  • The reward can apply when users disconnect before the battery reaches 85 percent after an 80 percent notification.
  • Off-peak charging between 10 PM and 6 AM can also earn credit.
  • Ionity says both options are intended to improve charger availability during heavy travel periods.
Tip

For long trips, the fastest plan is often not 10-80 every time. Shorter stops in the strongest part of the charging curve can beat one long session.

The bigger lesson is that charging networks are starting to manage demand like airports manage gates. Hardware scale still matters, but driver behavior, pricing windows and app nudges can make the same charger base work better during peak travel.
