Solid-state batteries generate endless headlines, so a rule that defines what the term actually means matters. China's first national solid-state battery standard took effect on July 1, setting clear thresholds for what can be marketed as a solid-state cell.

A definition, not a miracle

The standard classifies cells by how much liquid electrolyte they still contain. A cell with more than 20 percent liquid is treated as a conventional liquid battery; between 5 and 20 percent it is a hybrid solid-liquid design; and only under 5 percent, verified by a vacuum test at 120 degrees Celsius, earns the all-solid-state label. It is a definition designed to stop marketing from running ahead of the chemistry.

  • Under 5 percent, verified by a 120C vacuum test: genuine all-solid-state.

Why buyers should care

Solid-state chemistry promises higher energy density and better safety, which could mean more range in the same space. But standards like this are the boring groundwork that turns lab claims into cars. Chinese makers such as Dongfeng are already building small pilot lines aimed at vehicles later in 2026, targeting ranges up to 1,000 km. The technology is coming, just more gradually than the headlines imply.

When solid-state cars finally arrive, treat any range or charging claim the way you should today: wait for the real-world figure. A clear standard makes those claims easier to trust, not automatically true.
