Europe passes 1.24 million EVs in the first half as share tops 25%

Europe's switch to electric is accelerating rather than stalling. Half-year figures show more than 1.24 million fully electric cars registered across Europe in the first six months of 2026, up about 33.7 percent on the same period last year. In June alone, EVs reached 25.6 percent of new registrations — more than one car in four.

Records are becoming routine

June registrations across the major European markets rose almost 40 percent year over year. France set a record with 55,831 battery-electric registrations and a 29.6 percent share, while Spain, Slovenia and Czechia also posted their strongest-ever months. The pattern is broad rather than driven by a single market or a single brand.

What is pushing it

Several forces pull in the same direction: tightening emissions rules that make combustion cars costlier to sell, renewed incentives in several countries, and a wave of more affordable models from both European and Chinese makers. Higher pump prices in some markets add a steady nudge. The electric option is no longer a niche choice at the top of the range.
