The story

Aion is the new-energy vehicle brand of GAC Group (Guangzhou Automobile Group), one of China's largest state-owned automakers. Launched in 2018, Aion focuses on pure-electric vehicles built on GAC's dedicated GEP (GAC Electric Platform). The brand has rapidly expanded its lineup of sedans and SUVs, with growing export ambitions in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

Worth knowing
Aion's 'magazine battery' is named for its cell modules resembling a magazine — and survives nail penetration without fire. GAC Group also partners with Toyota
Honda
and Stellantis
giving Aion deep engineering pedigree.

The honest read
Strengths
  • +Aggressive pricing for the spec
  • +Proven LFP battery chemistry with strong safety record
  • +Spacious interiors on dedicated EV platforms
  • +Rapid model cycle and platform iteration
Watch-outs
  • Limited European dealer and service network
  • Software ecosystem still maturing outside China
  • Resale value unproven in Western markets
  • ADAS features tuned primarily for Chinese roads
Battery & platform DNA

Aion uses GAC's self-developed magazine battery technology — an LFP cell architecture designed to pass nail-penetration tests without thermal runaway. Higher trims use GAC's sponge-silicon anode NCM cells for increased energy density. Battery packs are produced in-house at GAC's Guangzhou facilities, giving the brand tight control over chemistry and quality.

EVRadar verdict

Aion brings genuinely competitive hardware at sharp prices, backed by GAC's industrial scale. For European buyers, the value proposition is strong — but software polish, service access, and resale confidence remain open questions.
