About the trip & charging estimator
- What does the trip estimator calculate?
- For a chosen electric car and a distance, it estimates whether the trip is possible non-stop, how many fast-charging stops it needs, and the total time including charging — plus the energy used and an approximate cost.
- Does it account for winter cold and motorway speed?
- Yes. It plans from each car's measured motorway and winter range rather than the WLTP sticker, because sustained high speed and low temperatures are the two biggest drains on real-world range. You set the conditions and the estimate updates.
- Where do the charging stops and charger data come from?
- The route is drawn with open routing data, charge stops are placed from the car's real range for the chosen conditions, and real fast chargers near each stop are pulled from OpenChargeMap so the plan reflects infrastructure that actually exists.
- How is the charging cost worked out?
- From a default public fast-charging tariff for the selected country's energy profile, applied to the energy each stop needs. It is a guide — your real cost depends on the network and any subscription you use.
- Is this a replacement for in-car navigation?
- No. It is a planning aid to sanity-check a route and compare cars before you set off; live navigation should still come from the car or a dedicated routing app that knows real-time charger status.
