V2L

V2L means vehicle-to-load: the car can power external devices from its traction battery. It matters if you want the EV to do more than drive. Device power, home backup, grid export and automatic charger billing are separate capabilities with separate requirements.

How to compare it

Useful for camping, tools, outages and charging small electronics. Check output power, socket type and whether it works while locked.

  • Identify the use case: devices, home, grid or charger authentication.
  • Check output power and socket type.
  • Confirm compatible external hardware.

What changes it

Bidirectional value changes with output power, socket type, inverter hardware, home equipment, tariffs, grid rules and manufacturer support.

  • V2L powers devices; V2H powers a home through proper equipment.
  • Output watts matter more than battery size for appliances.
  • Grid export depends on local rules, not only the car.

Common trap

V2L is not automatically home backup. It usually powers loads through a socket, not your whole house wiring.

  • The car alone is not enough for home or grid export.
  • Socket power can be much lower than the battery's stored energy suggests.

V2L: energy can leave the car

Vehicle energy can support devices, homes or the grid only when the surrounding hardware allows it.
