July EV sales jump across the UK, France and Ireland
Three fresh national datasets tell the same story: battery-electric registrations accelerated sharply in July, even though each market got there differently.
Europe's July registration data arrived with three unusually strong signals at once. New AutoMotive data reported by Reuters put UK battery-electric registrations at 43,547, up 49% year over year and equal to 27.4% of the new-car market. In France, PFA and AAA Data figures showed 44,378 fully electric cars and a 35% share. Ireland added a record 9,682 BEV registrations, according to SIMI figures reported by RTÉ.
The July numbers
- UK: 43,547 BEVs, up 49% year over year, for a 27.4% market share.
- France: 44,378 BEVs and a 35% share, up from roughly 15% a year earlier.
- Ireland: a record 9,682 BEVs, representing 26.12% of July registrations.
One direction, different engines
The headline is regional momentum, but the causes are not identical. France's new social-leasing round and the offers built around it helped bring EVs within reach of more private buyers. The UK result arrived while high fuel prices sharpened the running-cost comparison and the zero-emission vehicle mandate kept pressure on supply. Ireland's new-registration cycle produced a striking result of its own: pure EVs finished ahead of petrol hybrids, petrol and diesel.
Registration data are not the same as retail orders, and one strong month does not make a permanent trend. Fleet timing, incentives and number-plate changes can move deliveries between months. What matters here is the breadth: three markets with different tax systems, buyers and domestic brands all moved decisively in the same direction.
The useful buyer signal is competition. A larger EV share brings more stock and sharper offers, but compare real range, winter efficiency and charging—not only the monthly bestseller list.
