Heat pump

A heat pump warms the cabin by moving heat instead of only creating heat with resistive elements. It matters because the cabin and battery share the same energy store. Thermal management affects winter range, fast charging, comfort and battery protection.

How to compare it

It matters most in cool weather, short trips and stop-start winter driving. Compare it with battery preconditioning and real winter range.

  • Check winter range, preconditioning behaviour and cabin heat speed together.
  • Navigation-linked preconditioning is more useful than a manual-only setting.
  • Heat strategy depends on temperature, trip length and charger arrival time.

What changes it

Thermal performance changes with outside temperature, trip length, cabin demand, charger destination, battery chemistry and cooling hardware.

  • Preconditioning is most useful before DC fast charging.
  • Cabin heat and battery heat compete for energy in winter.
  • Very hot weather can also reduce sustained charging or performance.

Common trap

A heat pump is not a magic winter shield. Very low temperatures, wet roads and high cabin heat still reduce range.
